However, there is a fun side to the WWE vs. AEW conversation. During the Monday Night Wars, fans of WWF and WCW would always fantasy book the top stars of each company against one another. There was always talk of Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Goldberg or Sting vs. The Undertaker. This has now shifted to dream matches between the two top organizations today.
With All Elite Wrestling feeling bigger and hotter than it has ever felt with the arrival of CM Punk, it seems like an ideal time to fantasize about booking some legendary bouts between the two sides. In this article, let’s take a look at the ten WWE vs. AEW dream matches.
#10 The New Day vs. Orange Cassidy & Best Friends (WWE vs. AEW)
The New Day has been talked about a lot in possible WWE vs. AEW scenarios. Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, and Big E have teased a dream match with The Elite since 2016 and even faced the trio in a video game showdown over the E3 weekend a few years back. However, the Elite may be needed for bigger encounters, so there is another trio that New Day could face.
Orange Cassidy has been one of the most popular babyfaces in All Elite Wrestling. His character has connected with fans and his stock has risen since his debut. Best Friends was one of the first signings for AEW and has been featured in high-profile feuds and matches over the past two years. Orange and Best Friends could provide the ideal foes for New Day in a WWE vs. AEW supercard.
Both trios rely heavily on comedy in contests, but they can also mesh very well with their in-ring acumen. The matchups write themselves with Kofi and Trent having a bit of history from their times in developmental. There’s also Xavier and Chuck being two of the naturally funniest wrestlers in the business. Finally, there’s Orange and Big E who would create magic for their connection with fans.
#9 Drew McIntyre vs. PAC (WWE vs. AEW)
Potential WWE vs. AEW Supercard will feature competitors from all over the world. When looking over at the United Kingdom, there might not be a bigger dream match than Drew McIntyre vs. PAC. Both are exceptional in-ring performers and have been top stars in their individual promotions.
Drew McIntyre is a former two-time WWE Champion and a WrestleMania headliner. The Scottish Warrior is one of WWE’s biggest babyfaces and has been counted on to be in high-profile contests against the likes of Bobby Lashley, Randy Orton and Brock Lesnar. McIntyre is a superstar who could match up well with anyone from All Elite Wrestling.
PAC was formerly known as Neville in WWE. He won the NXT Championship and the WWE Cruiserweight Championship. Then known as “The King of the Cruiserweights”, he added a great deal of prestige to the division and title. For AEW, he has been in fantastic bouts against Orange Cassidy and Kenny Omega. This is a WWE vs. AEW showdown with some history behind it.
PAC and Drew McIntyre met a few times on the UK’s independent scene before both men signed with WWE. They have both grown in the past decade since their last meeting, which makes this a totally different WWE vs. AEW encounter. McIntyre and PAC fighting for the right to be called the best UK wrestler is one that can be extremely engrossing.
#8 Sasha Banks vs. Thunder Rosa (WWE vs. AEW)
Women’s wrestling is the best it has ever been, so that should be evident in a potential WWE vs. AEW supercard. Sasha Banks has been one of the greatest in-ring performers of the past decade, man or woman. She has won every championship available to her from NXT to Raw to SmackDown. Banks also headlined WrestleMania this year.
Thunder Rosa came to All Elite Wrestling as the NWA Women’s World Champion last year at AEW All Out 2020. Despite coming up short in her shot at the AEW Women’s World Championship, she has made the most of her opportunity with the promotion. Officially signing with AEW last month, Rosa has not only been one of the best wrestlers on the roster, but she has also ushered in other female talents.
Sasha Banks and Thunder Rosa are two of the most complete performers in the world. They possess a wide variety of skills inside the squared circle and regularly steal the show in a high-profile matchups. The two ladies have also been in two of the best matches of 2021 so far, making this a potential show-stealer of the WWE vs. AEW dream matches.
For Sasha, she was in the aforementioned WrestleMania 37 main event against Bianca Belair that was not only tremendous but history-making with two African American women headlining. For Rosa, she put on a thrilling Lights Out Match against Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D. on the March 17th AEW Dynamite. With two of the most polished workers in the game, this is a WWE vs. AEW classic in the making.
#7 The Mysterios vs. The Lucha Brothers (WWE vs. AEW)
Many different factors have led to the WWE vs. AEW conversation amongst wrestling fans. The predecessor to All Elite Wrestling was the “All In” event three years ago. The main event of that pay-per-view saw The Young Bucks team up with Kota Ibushi to face Bandido, Rey Fenix, and Rey Mysterio. This marked the final non-WWE event for the latter.
Just one month later, Mysterio re-signed with WWE after four years away. Two years later, his son Dominik made his in-ring debut at SummerSlam 2020, which was a dream come true for Rey and part of the reason he stayed with the company. Earlier this year, Rey and Dominik became the first father-son duo to win WWE Tag Team Championship gold.
There is no other tag team quite as exciting as the Lucha Brothers in AEW. Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix have been in the spotlight for the promotion from the very beginning. They were in a high-profile feud with The Young Bucks that set the standard for tag team wrestling in All Elite Wrestling. Pretty much any WWE tag team against the Lucha Bros. is a WWE vs. AEW dream match.
Rey Fenix has drawn comparisons to Rey Mysterio for much of his career. Mysterio is one of the greatest luchadors of all time, while Fenix is the best high flier in the business today. This WWE vs. AEW tag team bout will be exhilarating and feature so much non-stop action. It would be a high-octane sprint that all the fans would remember.
#6 Seth Rollins vs. Hangman Page (WWE vs. AEW)
Seth Rollins hasn’t shied away from the WWE vs. AEW talk due to his controversial social media game. He is one of WWE’s top stars and the most decorated superstar in the company today. Rollins has won the WWE Championship twice, the Universal Championship twice and is a grand slam winner.
Seth Rollins has also become one of the best heels in the company, so he could be the perfect opponent for any babyface in these WWE vs. AEW showdowns. The best of the bunch in All Elite Wrestling has to be Hangman Page. The former AEW World Tag Team Champion has been pegged to be the next world champion.
Hangman Page has become known for being overwhelmingly popular due to his identifiable millennial cowboy persona. Page and Rollins would mesh very well with a nice mix of counter-work as well as athleticism that keeps fans fully engaged in what they do inside the ring.
Character-wise, this may be one of the best WWE vs. AEW dream matches. Seth Rollins is known as the Messiah and shows a great deal of arrogance against any opposition, while Hangman Page is insecure and relies on alcohol to hide his failures. Together, the two men have the potential to craft a compelling feud and some terrific encounters.
#5 The Usos vs. The Young Bucks (WWE vs. AEW)
Tag team wrestling will feature strongly on any WWE vs. AEW supercard with marvelous tag teams on both sides. The Young Bucks are Executive Vice Presidents for All Elite Wrestling and the current AEW World Tag Team Champions.
Matt and Nick Jackson have also been in some of the best tag team contests of the past decade against FTR, the Lucha Brothers, Kenny Omega, and Hangman Page. Despite interacting with and facing so many of the same tag teams, the only team that the Young Bucks have never crossed paths with is The Usos.
The Usos have cemented their legacy as one of the greatest tag teams in WWE history. Jimmy and Jey are seven-time WWE Tag Team Champions and the current SmackDown Tag Team Champions. They have also been in classic encounters with the likes of the New Day, The Wyatt Family, and the Shield. The Young Bucks have been a team that has drawn comparisons to the Usos for years.
This WWE vs. AEW dream match is years in the making for many reasons. The love of superkicks is something shared by both of these tag teams. They have also been anchors for tag team wrestling due to their action-packed style of contests over the years. Their double-team moves are unmatched by many teams other than these two. This is a must-see dream encounter in every way.
#4 Becky Lynch vs. Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D. (WWE vs. AEW)
WWE vs. AEW Supercard can’t just have one women’s matchup. Sasha Banks vs. Thunder Rosa is one for those fans who love their work rate. However, this lineup would also need a women’s dream match that is about star power and strong characters. When looking at the WWE side, there is no bigger female talent than “The Man” Becky Lynch.
Lynch won the first women’s main event of WrestleMania and is the current SmackDown Women’s Champion. She has been in headline matches with the likes of Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks and Ronda Rousey. Her name is at the top of any list of main event talent in the company and has to be included in a WWE vs. AEW supercard.
Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D., is not the current AEW Women’s World Champion, but she is among the biggest stars in the entire promotion. Her heel turn and cocky persona took the first female signing for All Elite Wrestling to the next level, but it was her Match of the Year candidate against Thunder Rosa earlier this year that left no question that she was a breakout superstar.
Baker vs. Lynch screams money and won’t look out of place in the main event spot of a WWE vs. AEW supercard. Both ladies exude charisma, are excellent talkers, and step up in the ring when given a big-time spot. This would be a marquee encounter for whichever promotion and something fans would be excited to see.
#3 Samoa Joe vs. CM Punk (WWE vs. AEW)
There is so much history with some of these WWE vs. AEW dream matches, but they pale in comparison to this one. Samoa Joe vs. CM Punk is a rivalry that elevated both men to superstardom and allowed them to be signed for top promotions following their classic series of encounters. Now, over 15 years later, the contest will be even more captivating.
Samoa Joe is the current NXT Championship and the first superstar to win the title three times. His release and then re-signing with WWE has helped raise intrigue in him overall and allowed a bigger spotlight on the former TNA Heavyweight Champion. Joe has a different aura to himself than anyone else on the WWE roster, whether it be NXT, Raw, or SmackDown.
Although there are many competitors that Joe would match up well within a WWE vs. AEW supercard, none are quite as interesting as CM Punk. Punk has found himself in the headlines once again after making his long-awaited return to professional wrestling on the First Dance special of AEW Rampage on August 20th this year.
With his in-ring return against Darby Allin at AEW All Out 2021 on the horizon, there are old scores for him to settle in not just All Elite Wrestling, but also in WWE. At the top of that list is a man who was never able to defeat Samoa Joe. They had three incredible bouts with two ending in a one-hour draw and Joe winning the last. This WWE vs. AEW confrontation feels necessary.
For many fans, Samoa Joe vs. CM Punk is the final encounter that everyone wished could have happened if Joe hadn’t been re-signed by WWE. The two men haven’t touched each other since Punk signed with WWE and Joe signed with TNA in 2005. This just might be the WWE vs. AEW dream match that needs to happen the most.
#2 AJ Styles vs. Kenny Omega (WWE vs. AEW)
Another WWE vs. AEW showdown with a lot of history behind it is the battle between former Bullet Club leaders AJ Styles and Kenny Omega. The Bullet Club is one of the most prolific and important stables of the past decade. The group has helped launch the careers of many top stars and make NJPW more prominent in the United States.
Former leader Prince Devitt left NJPW to become Finn Balor in WWE, which led to AJ Styles coming into New Japan and taking the mantle of leader of the Bullet Club. He defeated Kazuchika Okada in his first official match to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and solidified his position as the head of the group. The rise was great, but the fall helped shape this potential WWE vs. AEW bout.
Key losses to Okada, Tanahashi and Nakamura hurt his spot at the top of the Bullet Club. With a move to WWE imminent, Kenny Omega took this opportunity to take his shot and layout Styles. Alongside the Young Bucks, Omega took AJ’s spot as the Bullet Club leader. This should be the logical catalyst for this WWE vs. AEW dream match.
Despite facing each other in the past, including a contest that Omega credits for helping him continue his wrestling career, these versions of Kenny and AJ have never faced each other. AJ Styles has gone on to new heights of success in WWE, winning the WWE Championship twice and becoming a grand slam winner for the company.
Kenny Omega won the IWGP Intercontinental, United States, and Heavyweight Championships once AJ Styles left NJPW. Since signing with AEW, he has won the AEW World Tag Team and World Championships as well as the IMPACT World and AAA Mega Championships. These might just be the two most decorated opponents to match up in a WWE vs. AEW battle.
There is so much history and animosity to explore here. The Bullet Club helped take both men’s careers to the top of three different promotions. NJPW, WWE, and AEW wouldn’t be the same without AJ Styles and Kenny Omega. There might not be a bigger WWE vs. AEW dream match than this, but there is one other that has just as much of a checkered past and potential.
#1 Roman Reigns vs. Jon Moxley (WWE vs. AEW)
Roman Reigns might just be the biggest star in all of wrestling and should headline a potential WWE vs. AEW supercard. He has established himself as the unquestionable top star that WWE has always wanted him to be. Reigns always had the accolades, being a former WWE Champion, Intercontinental, United States, and current Universal Champion.
Roman Reigns’ heel turn and aligning with Paul Heyman helped launch him to the perch that he now sits on. His character change into the Tribal Chief has been the best thing on WWE television and has helped him gain the confidence that was missing to make him the complete package. Regardless of who stands across the ring from him on a WWE vs. AEW supercard, Roman will be in the marquee.
But no competitor in All Elite Wrestling knows Roman Reigns quite like Jon Moxley. The former Dean Ambrose kicked off his WWE main roster career alongside Roman in the Shield. With Seth Rollins, the three men became the most dominant stable in the company and allowed the trio to become individual top guys in their own right.
Dean Ambrose left a lucrative long-term contract with WWE to leave the company and sign with AEW. That decision may have been a move that has solidified Jon Moxley’s legacy. Moxley has become one of the most popular and significant stars in the history of the promotion. He was the AEW World Champion during the pandemic and helped stir the ship.
Despite meeting in the WWE Championship finals at Survivor Series 2015 and in a Shield Triple Threat at Battleground 2016, Moxley and Reigns have never been in a full-fledged feud against one another. The fact that fans have never seen these men build a high-profile main event makes this the most essential of all WWE vs. AEW battles.
The Shield will always be remembered for the impact that they have had on the past few years in the WWE and now AEW. Reigns, Rollins, and Moxley are still three of the biggest superstars in the business today. Rollins has feuded with both, but Reigns vs. Moxley might be the biggest missed opportunity for WWE that only enhances a potential WWE vs. AEW supercard.
Jon Moxley is totally different from Dean Ambrose. Moxley has become the best babyface promo in the industry and brings a level of anticipation to his matches through his thought-provoking speeches. He could make a WWE vs. AEW showdown against R-Truth among the most hyped matches on a potential supercard.
With Moxley’s fantastic promos and Roman’s outstanding character work, the buildup will be magnificent to watch unfold. Paul Heyman and Eddie Kingston being involved in promos would be the cherry on top of what would be an amazing feud. That’s why Roman Reigns vs. Jon Moxley may be the biggest WWE vs. AEW dream match in wrestling today.
