WWE’s “Biggest Party of The Summer” has taken place every year since its introduction in 1988 when 28 Superstars competed on a stacked 10-match card which was headlined by Hulk Hogan & “Macho Man” Randy Savage vs. Andre The Giant & Ted DiBiase.
Since then, more than 200 men and women have performed at SummerSlam and the event has become one of the most star-studded and anticipated WWE shows on the pay-per-view calendar.
So, with the annual event set to take place again this year on 19 August, we decided to delve into the WWE archives to have a look at the most successful Superstars throughout the PPV’s 30-year history.
Without further ado, and with special thanks to profightdb.com and cagematch.net for storing the match information, let’s count down the 10 WWE Superstars who have recorded the most victories at SummerSlam between 1988 and 2017.
Disclaimer: Tag team turmoil matches enter the record books as individual matches, so Edge and Christian’s three victories in a 1999 tag team turmoil match count as three separate victories.
Joint #6 Shawn Michaels (6 wins)
Shawn Michaels failed to win any of his first three SummerSlam matches between 1989 and 1992, but a run of six victories from his next eight matches at “The Biggest Party of The Summer” qualifies him for this list.
HBK’s first two victories at the event came in Intercontinental Championship matches – against Mr Perfect in 1993 and, most memorably, against Razor Ramon in 1995 – before he defeated Vader in a WWE Championship match in 1996.
The WWE Hall of Famer went on to win three more SummerSlam matches during his final run with the company, defeating Triple H in an unsanctioned match in 2002 before teaming with “The Game” in victories over Vince & Shane McMahon in 2006 and against Legacy in 2009.
Joint #6 Kane (6 wins)
Considering that Kane has been a full-time member of the WWE roster for the majority of his 20 years with the company, it’s a little surprising that he has only competed in 11 matches at SummerSlam during his career.
“The Big Red Machine” has won six matches at the August PPV, defeating DDP & Kanyon, RVD, Matt Hardy, Finlay, The Great Khali and Rey Mysterio during a six-match SummerSlam winning streak between 2001 and 2010.
The most memorable of those victories came in 2004 when he defeated Hardy in a “Till Death Do Us Part” match. As per the stipulation, Lita was forced to marry the 7-foot Superstar (yes, really!).
Joint #6 Christian (6 wins)
Christian picked up a respectable six victories at SummerSlam throughout his career, which isn’t all that surprising when you consider that three of the triumphs – against The New Brood, Mideon & Viscera and Droz & Albert – came alongside Edge during a tag team turmoil match in 1999.
The nine-time WWE Tag Team champion went on to win three more matches at the event, including in 2000 when he teamed with Edge again to defeat The Dudley Boyz and The Hardy Boyz in the first of many TLC matches.
After splitting from Edge, he teamed with Lance Storm to retain the World Tag Team titles against Booker T and Goldust in 2002, while he defeated William Regal in a seven-second ECW title match in 2009.
Joint #6 Brock Lesnar (6 wins)
One of the most memorable matches of Brock Lesnar’s career came at SummerSlam 2002 when, just four months on from his main-roster debut, he defeated The Rock to become the new WWE Undisputed champion.
Since then, “The Beast” has won five of his last seven matches at the event, picking up victories over Hall of Fame-worthy Superstars including Triple H, CM Punk, John Cena and Randy Orton.
His most recent win at “The Biggest Party of The Summer” came in 2017 when he defended his Universal Championship against Roman Reigns, Samoa Joe and Braun Strowman in the main event.
Joint #6 Hulk Hogan (6 wins)
Hulk Hogan is part of an elite group of WWE Superstars who remained undefeated at SummerSlam, with his first victory coming in 1988 and his last triumph coming in 2006.
Between 1988 and 1991, “The Hulkster” competed at four SummerSlam events in a row, defeating The Mega Bucks and The Triangle of Terror in tag matches and Earthquake and Sgt Slaughter in singles matches.
Then, during his final in-ring run with WWE, Hogan was victorious in marquee matches against Shawn Michaels in 2005 and Randy Orton in 2006.
Joint #4 Bret Hart (7 wins)
Bret Hart has mentioned in interviews over the years how his WWE legacy is better defined at SummerSlam than at WrestleMania.
The WWE Hall of Famer won seven of his 11 matches at the event, starting with a Two out of Three Falls victory over Demolition to win the World Tag Team titles as a member of The Hart Foundation in 1990.
He went on to win five matches at the PPV as a singles competitor in the 90s, defeating Mr Perfect, Doink, Owen Hart, Isaac Yankem and The Undertaker, while he returned to WWE in 2010 to defeat The Nexus as part of John Cena’s Team WWE faction.
Joint #4 Randy Orton (7 wins)
When all’s said and done, Randy Orton’s legacy as a WWE Superstar will be defined by his 13 world championship victories – but did you know that three of those title wins came at SummerSlam?
“The Viper” won major WWE gold for the first time when he defeated Chris Benoit in 2004, while he also walked away with Heavyweight Championships when he was victorious against Christian in 2011 and Daniel Bryan in 2013.
The future Hall of Famer has also picked up wins over The Undertaker, John Cena and Sheamus at the event, and his most recent SummerSlam victory came in a 10-second match against Rusev in 2017.
#3 Triple H (8 wins)
Triple H has won eight of his 13 matches at SummerSlam, defeating the good, bad and ugly from WWE’s past and present along the way.
Between 1995 and 2002, “The Game” only won two of his six matches at the event, defeating Bob Holly on his PPV debut in 1995 before winning the Intercontinental Championship in a ladder match against The Rock in 1998.
From 2003 to 2009, HHH’s luck changed and he won all six of his SummerSlam matches during that time, defeating Eugene, Vince & Shane McMahon, King Booker, The Great Khali and Legacy, while also outlasting five other men to win the Elimination Chamber match in 2003.
#2 The Undertaker (10 wins)
With 16 in-ring appearances at SummerSlam, nobody has featured in more matches at WWE’s annual August PPV than the legendary Undertaker.
“The Deadman” won his first four matches at the event, defeating Kamala, Giant Gonzalez, ‘Fake Undertaker’ and Kama between 1992 and 1995, before failing to pick up a victory in his next three SummerSlam encounters.
Since then, he has won Tag Team titles on two occasions, teaming with The Big Show to defeat Kane & X-Pac in 1999 and with Kane to defeat DDP & Kanyon in 2001, while he won non-title singles matches against Test, A-Train, Edge and Brock Lesnar between 2002 and 2015.
#1 Edge (11 wins)
Okay, so The Undertaker has been victorious at more SummerSlam PPVs than Edge, but the record books state that “The Rated-R Superstar” has won more individual matches at the event than his former rival, so he just takes #1 spot in this list.
The WWE Hall of Famer won an unprecedented 11 matches at SummerSlam, starting with a tag team victory alongside Sable against Jacqueline & Marc Mero in 1998 and finishing with a win as part of Team WWE against The Nexus in 2010.
Between those victories, he teamed with Christian to defeat The New Brood, Mideon & Viscera and Droz & Albert in separate matches in 1999, while they were victorious again in 2000 in a TLC tag match against The Hardy Boyz and The Dudley Boyz.
During his run as a singles competitor, Edge was also victorious against Lance Storm, Eddie Guerrero, Batista & Chris Jericho, Matt Hardy and John Cena.
