RELATED: Resident Evil Reboot: Other Horror Games That Need A Film Treatment
That’s not where the differences between the film and games end, either. The characters and events may look familiar from the outside, but the filmmakers couldn’t have gone in a more far-out direction if they tried. Of all the plot points that weren’t answered or didn’t make sense, which among them are at the top? There will be spoilers for Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.
10 Who Was Wesker Working For?
Unlike his role in the main games, Wesker in Welcome to Raccoon City seems to be oblivious to Umbrella’s evildoing. He later tells Jill that someone informed him that they wanted him to get information from Umbrella deep below the Spencer Mansion.
It is never revealed who this person or group is. Based on the final stinger, it could be Ada. TriCell might also be behind the request, which would be a nice reveal for a sequel movie.
9 Where Did Claire Go After The Orphanage?
Earlier in the movie, it seems like Claire left Chris when they were older. Eventually, it is revealed that she left Raccoon City when she was still a child after Birkin tried to experiment on her. Since they were orphans, that then must mean Chris and Claire had no other family to care for them after their parents got into their accident.
If that’s the case, though, then where did Claire go after escaping the orphanage? It’s not like she was old enough to get a job, so it’s unknown how she survived on her own.
8 Birkin Having To Go To His Lab
Birkin is a lead scientist at Umbrella. That’s how it was in the games, and that is what fans can infer from the events of the film. If Birkin knew that Raccoon City was going to get destroyed at a moment’s notice, why didn’t he have the G-Virus in a safe at home?

It’s strange that Umbrella didn’t make sure that asset was going to be secure at all times. What’s more, it seemed like a dangerous idea for Birkin to go to a secret lab with his family in the middle of a zombie outbreak. Someone wasn’t planning ahead on that one.
7 Why Did Bertolucci Send Claire A VHS Tape?
One of the funnier lines in the film has Claire telling Chris that she found out some Umbrella secrets via a chat room. Chris has no idea what that even is, which fits his clueless personality. To place the setting even more firmly in the 90s, she pops out a VHS tape.
If Claire was talking to Bertolucci in a chat room, though, then why did he bother sending a video? He could have just as easily emailed her something. Shipping around VHS tapes seemed costly and inefficient.
6 Lisa Trevor’s Existence Pre And Post Ending
Lisa Trevor was an unexpected guest role from the first game that appeared in the film, and there are a few unanswered questions about her. It’s never mentioned why she was allowed to run around the orphanage, or why she took a shining to Claire.
In the game, it is revealed that she can escape easily from Umbrella as she is, for all intents and purposes, a super-soldier. It’s a little odd why Leon and Claire didn’t ask her to come with them since she saved them from the Licker. Is she dead now? Did she die when Raccoon City was destroyed?
5 Why Were The Police Spared?
It seems like Umbrella was infecting Raccoon City citizens by putting the T-Virus in the water supply. At least, that’s what Bertolucci suggests to Claire in his secret VHS tape. That could be just a theory, but it does some sense.

Later at the jail, Bertolucci tells Leon that he thinks the police were given some sort of booster to prevent the virus from infecting their bodies. But why were they spared? Wesker wasn’t working for Umbrella. It makes sense in the context of the games, but not in the movie.
4 Does Umbrella Have Earthquake Bombs?
How exactly did Umbrella destroy the mansion and the entirety of Raccoon City in the blink of an eye? In Resident Evil 3, a bomb was dropped to destroy the town and wipe it off the planet. In the first game, the mansion was set to blow at the end. These two places sort of implode in the film instead.
Did Umbrella invent some sort of earthquake bomb? Maybe they used a worm tunneling monster like the one that appeared in Resident Evil 3’s park. In any case, it’s not completely clear how they destroyed these locations.
3 Where Did Ada Take Wesker?
Where was Ada hiding during the movie? She had to be in the NEST facility somewhere in order to save Wesker in time to pull him out of the implosion. Maybe some Umbrella soldiers took him away — but does this mean that Ada officially works for Umbrella in this timeline?
Ada could also be working for herself, since that room didn’t look like any sort of official Umbrella lab. Whatever the case may be, Wesker putting on those glasses in the final scene was meme-worthy.
2 Was That Hunk?
Hunk is one of the most mysterious characters in the entire franchise. When Chief Irons is trying to escape the city, there is one soldier at the border that is clearly in charge. This could in fact be Hunk.
He’s not in the movie for more than a minute; however, placing him at the border would be a good setup for a sequel or even a side-sequel. It may be just a random soldier, but the movie does have plenty of Easter eggs. It wouldn’t be out of the question for this soldier to be important.
1 Chris Should Have Died
Chris is one of the luckiest members of STARs in the game and in the movie. Both he and Richard are overrun by zombies with little ammo left; however, the only one to die was Richard. There was absolutely no reason why Chris shouldn’t have been bitten at least once in this chaos as well.
The only reasonable theory is his plot armor. Chris is a main character, and by that logic, he must survive long enough before help arrives. Jill was like the deus ex machina of this scene.
