Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Chelsea are the only clubs who have never endured relegation in the Premier League era. Manchester United (13) lead a group of six different clubs to have won the title.
United (656) also lead a group of four clubs comprising Arsenal (570), Chelsea (569), and Liverpool (547) to have won over 500 Premier league games.
1 January 2020 marked the 10,000th day since the opening round of Premier League football on 15 August 1992. On that note, let us look at 10 unique facts or records about the Premier League.
#1 Ryan Giggs is the only player to score in each of the first 21 seasons of the Premier League
Welshman Ryan Giggs is the only player to score in each of the first 21 seasons of the English Premier League. The Welshman’s 21 different tally of scoring seasons in the competition is the most by any player.
Giggs’ 13 Premier League titles (all for Manchester United) is also a record haul of titles by a player in the competition.
#2 Manchester United are the only team to win three consecutive Premier League titles
With 13 titles, Manchester United are one of only four clubs to have won the Premier League on multiple occasions.
Of the quartet comprising themselves, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, only Chelsea and Manchester City apart from United have won the competition in consecutive seasons.
However, United are the only team to win the Premier League in three consecutive seasons, doing so in 1998-1999, 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and again in 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09.
#3 The 5 goals in a game club
Sergio Aguero scored five goals for Manchester City in a 2015-16 Premier League game against Aston Villa. In the process, the Argentina striker became only the fifth player in the history of the competition to score five in a game.
The others to do so are Dimitar Berbatov (for Manchester United against Blackburn in 2010-11), Jermain Defoe (for Tottenham Hotspur vs Wigan Athletic in 2009-10), Alan Shearer (for Newcastle United against Sheffield United in 1999-2000) and Andy Cole (for Manchester United against Ipswich Town in 1994-95).
#4 Sergio Aguero is the first player to score 11 Premier League hat-tricks for a single club
Sergio Aguero’s hat-trick in Manchester City’s thumping 6-0 home win over Chelsea in the 2018-19 Premier League took him level with Alan Shearer (11) for most hat-tricks in the competition.
However, the Argentine’s hat-trick haul is the most by any player for a single club.
#5 Arsenal are the only side to go unbeaten in a Premier League season
Arsenal won 26 games and drew 12 to win their third and most recent title in the Premier League era.
In the process, the Gunners became the first and so far only team to stay unbeaten during an entire Premier League season.
#6 Only 1 Premier League title has been decided on goal-difference
In 2011-12, both Manchester United and Manchester City ended with the same tally of points (89).
However, the title went to the blue half of Manchester owing to City’s superior goal difference (+64) compared to United (+56). That remains the only occasion during 27 Premier League editions that the title was decided on goal difference.
#7 Manchester United are the only Premier League team to win a continental treble
Manchester United are the only Premier League team to win a continental treble of league, league cup and European Cup in the same season.
The record 13-time Premier League winners achieved the coveted feat in 1998-99 when they won the Premier League, FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
#8 Manchester City are the only Premier League team to breach the 100-point barrier
In 2017-18, Manchester City became the first team to breach the 100-point barrier in the Premier League. The Citizens racked up 32 wins, 4 draws and just two losses to pip Manchester United by a record margin of 19 points to the title.
During the season, City became the first Premier team to win 32 games in a season. They went on to repeat the feat next year to stave off a determined challenge from Liverpool.
#9 Manchester City are the only Premier League team to secure a domestic treble
Manchester City became the first Premier League team to secure the domestic treble of league, FA Cup and League Cup in 2018-19.
The Citizens staved off a determined challenge from Liverpool to successfully defend their Premier League title, either side of beating Chelsea on penalties in the Carabao Cup (formerly called the League Cup) final and overwhelming Watford 6-0 in the FA Cup final.
#10 Only 2 Premier League players have won the Ballon d’Or
In 2008, Cristiano Ronaldo lifted his first (of five) Ballon d’Or awards. That made the then 23-year-old Manchester United winger the first Premier League player to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen (Liverpool) won the 2001 edition of the award.
No other Premier League player has won the coveted award ever since.
Ronaldo would go on to win a further four Ballon d’Or awards (all for Real Madrid).
