Though not everyone will agree to this, WWE’s booking has been way better recently than what it has been in the last few years. From Seth Rollins winning the Royal Rumble to the ever-engaging Becky-Ronda-Charlotte saga, fans are continuously being treated to interesting storylines.
With the advancement of the IWC (Internet Wrestling Community), fans continuously keep on predicting what’s going to happen next in the WWE Universe. While most of the veteran fans are able to somewhat guess the direction in which the storylines are going, there are still a lot of unexpected things that WWE can pull off to keep everyone guessing.
One of the recent examples of this is the sudden rise of Kofi Kingston since the past one month. No one would have been able to predict that Kofi would get involved in the WWE Championship scene at WrestleMania. But this is the beauty of pro wrestling. The only predictable thing about it is that it is unpredictable.
In this article let’s take a look at the 10 unexpected things that might happen in WWE by the end of 2019. These things would surely shake the entire landscape of WWE and add to the excitement of the WWE fans around the globe. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section.
#10 The Undertaker returns for another match
The Undertaker has arguably been the greatest performer in the history of WrestleMania. His undefeated streak was one of the biggest achievements in the entire pro wrestling world.
Since the last couple of years, rumors of him retiring have continuously spread on the internet. Despite that, The Dead Man keeps coming back every year to claim his yard.
But recently, the situation has been different. The Undertaker has been making a number of appearances out-of-character and if the rumors are to be believed, he has already retired from in-ring competition.
Vince is famous for making superstars come back for one more match, the recent example being Shawn Michaels at WWE Crown Jewel. Though it looks unlikely at this point, Vince could once again manipulate Taker to come back for one final match before he calls a day.
#9 Finn Balor turns heel, forms WWE’s Bullet Club with AJ Styles
There’s no denying the fact that Finn Balor is one of the best wrestlers in the world. But it’s a shame that a superstar of this caliber was booked so poorly last year. To the delight of fans, 2019 has started pretty well for Balor and WWE might finally give him the “big” push that he deserves.
Currently, Balor is the Intercontinental Champion and is rumored to move to SmackDown during the superstar shake-up. With AJ Styles already on SmackDown, this is a great opportunity for WWE to turn Balor heel and form a revamped version of one of the biggest faction in pro wrestling.
Yes, we are talking about the Bullet/Balor Club. Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows haven’t really had a great run in WWE, and this would be an amazing way of lifting their status up in the roster. Imagine this heel faction going against The Shield. Excited, aren’t you?
#8 NXT Invasion Angle led by Paul Heyman
NXT has been one of the best things that are going on in WWE for the last few years. While fans usually have a lot of complaints about the product on the main roster, the same is not the case with the yellow brand.
Superstars like Adam Cole, Velveteen Dream, Johnny Gargano, Tomasso Ciampa, Ricochet and many more are Internet darlings and with the amazing creative genius of Triple H, the feuds and booking on NXT is top notch.
The only thing that it sometimes lacks is exposure. Not many casual WWE fans know much about WWE. A great way to deal with this would be an NXT invasion angle on the main roster.
If Brock Lesnar leaves WWE, that would als leave Paul Heyman without anyone to manage. A great way to use him would be to let Paul Heyman lead the NXT superstars and cause havoc on the main roster. Triple H could also be heavily involved in this, as his own NXT would go against him and invade the main roster.
#7 Conor McGregor comes to WWE
In the last few years, WWE and UFC have clearly shown us that they have a good working partnership between them.
The shift of stars like Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler to WWE, as well as Brock Lesnar jumping ships time and again is a good indication that both these top brands in the world of pro wrestling and mixed martial arts are in a good relationship.
One of the biggest stars in UFC right now who keeps on engaging with WWE superstars on social media is the two-weight UFC World Champion, Conor McGregor. While there have been no official words on him jumping ships, but Conor definitely has what it takes to be successful in WWE.
His infamous Vince McMahon entrance walk, combined with his great trash talking skills could make him rise to the top of the WWE roster, if and when he arrives.
This isn’t something that is completely outside the realms of possibility, but this would certainly be a big shock for the fans of both WWE and UFC if he does actually show up on either RAW or SmackDown (or WrestleMania?).
#6 Samoa Joe wins the WWE Championship
I’m open for a debate on the fact that Samoa Joe is one of the most underrated wrestlers currently in WWE. His amazing athleticism, combined with his sheer strength and amazing mic work makes him a perfect choice for a top champion in any wrestling company.
In his relatively short run in NXT, he became the first man to hold the NXT championship twice. But unfortunately, he hasn’t had similar success on the main roster. It’s been over two years since his main roster debut on January 2017, and only now has he won his first championship in the form of the United States Title.
Now I as well as many fans are hoping that this is the start of something good for Joe. Considering his recent success on the main roster it’s tough to see him become the WWE Champion any time soon. But in my prediction, WWE would do the unexpected and make Joe the WWE Champ before the year ends.
#5 Brock Lesnar stays in WWE
In the recent stats revealed by a source, Brock Lesnar earns around a whopping $10 Million per year. Without any doubt, he’s the highest paid wrestler in WWE.
Brock won the Universal Championship for the 2nd time in the Crown Jewel PPV last year. Currently, he is scheduled to defend his title against the 2019 Royal Rumble winner Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 35.
Many fans are expecting Rollins to finally overcome the Beast and defeat him for the title. One big reason for that is the continuous talks of Brock leaving WWE to go to UFC. Last year also after his loss to Roman Reigns at SummerSlam, a lot of fans expected him to get back to the Octagon. But Vince somehow convinced Lesnar to stick a little longer.
Will Brock finally leave for UFC this year? Or Vince will again swerve the fans by letting Brock retain the title at WrestleMania and stay in WWE for another year or so?
#4 AJ Styles wins the Universal Championship
In one of the previous slides, I mentioned how Finn Balor can be drafted to SmackDown to form a new Bullet Club with AJ Styles and The Club. Another interesting choice at the superstar shake-up would be to draft AJ Styles to RAW.
AJ has been on SmackDown since the brand split and has played a major role in establishing it as a proper competitor to RAW. During the course, he won the WWE Championship twice, with his latter run with the title lasting for more than a year.
Now it might be the time for Styles to shift to RAW to have some new feuds, and hopefully win the Universal Championship. With Seth Rollins expected to win the Universal Title at WrestleMania, a feud between him and The Phenomenal One leading to a match at SummerSlam would be amazing.
#3 Roman Reigns turns heel
Roman Reigns shocked the entire world last year in October by announcing the return of his Leukemia and vacating the Universal Championship. Fans and the whole roster behind were all in tears to see the Big Dog announce such bad news.
Fortunately, Reigns is in remission and is back in action, reforming the Shield. His eyes are set on reclaiming his yard. He got a heroic welcome on RAW last week as the whole arena was echoing with the chants of “Roman Reigns” and “Welcome Back”.
WWE is finally getting the kind of response from fans for Reigns as they always wanted. At this point, no one is expecting him to turn heel.
But WWE could pull a swerve on all the fans and turn Reigns heel this year. Imagine Reigns being the one turning on the Shield this time, letting Dean and Seth know that the Shield is nothing without its powerhouse. Would be an interesting storyline, to say the least.
One amazing thing to add to his heel turn and make him a top star would be to make Paul Heyman his manager and mouthpiece.
#2 John Cena wins his 17th World Title
John Cena is arguably the most popular WWE Superstar of this generation. His accomplishments in the world of pro wrestling are clear proof of that.
Being a two-time Royal Rumble Champion, John Cena holds the record of the maximum number of World Championship reigns with 16, tieing the record with The Nature Boy, Ric Flair.
His last Championship victory came in the 2017 Royal Rumble PPV where he defeated AJ Styles in a classic to win the WWE Championship. Ever since, he has been out of the title picture, thanks to his busy Hollywood schedule and part-time status.
The WWE creative would be eager to form a storyline that would lead to the record-breaking 17th World Title Reign of the Poster boy of WWE.
Considering Cena might hang up his boots soon, this might all come true this year. John Cena can have a showdown with either the WWE or the Universal Champion at WrestleMania to set up a clash at SummerSlam.
#1 Vince McMahon retires, TripleH takes over the company
Triple H currently serves as the COO and the Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events and Creative for WWE. However, with Vince McMahon getting old and his new venture XFL coming next year in 2020, he might want to shift his attention towards it and take less responsibility of the WWE product.
Triple H has been doing a great job with the developmental brand of WWE, NXT. He has been calling the shots there and leading the creative and storylines and in a short span, NXT has earned the praises of fans and critics for the outstanding level of wrestling and feuds.
Considering all these facts, 2019 might be the year when Vince McMahon decides to step down and retire. Once that happens, it’s very clear that Triple H will take over the company and take it to new heights.
The Game’s vision is to establish WWE as a global brand, as visible through his establishment of NXT UK brand and rumors of WWE setting up performance centers in a number of countries around the globe.
All and all, once Triple H takes over WWE, we will actually get into a new era of pro wrestling.
