The Knives Out movies will be coming to Netflix, but they haven’t got an official release date quite yet. There are some details that have been revealed that have fans excited about the adventures of Daniel Craigs’ Benoit Blanc in the future, but the sequels won’t be exactly like the first movie, either.
10 It Cost Netflix More Than $400 Million To Purchase Knives Out
To purchase the rights to Knives Out and produce the planned sequels, Netflix paid 450 million dollars to Media Rights Capital. It’s an extreme amount of money, but Netflix has faith in the potential of a regular murder mystery series, especially based on one with such rave reviews.
The films will debut on Netflix and likely be released in select theatres in populous cities as well. Netflix likes to do limited theatrical runs of its new features, and this series will likely not be an exception.
9 …And There’s Not One, But Two Sequels Planned
The $450 million spent on the Knives Out property won’t have been wasted, considering that Netflix plans to make not one, but two sequels currently. It’s a sign that Netflix has a lot at stake for this to be a success.
Based on the reception of Rian Johnson’s original film, as long as he can tell a unique story with the same unique feeling of the first film, it’ll be well worth two sequels – or more.
8 The Sequels Won’t Be About The Thrombey Family
There are few things that have been confirmed about the sequel to Knives Out, but one of them is that the sequels will not feature the Thrombey family at the center of the first movie’s plot.
Several actors have expressed interest in returning to the Agatha Christie-inspired world. However, Rian Johnson has explicitly stated that any future Knives Out stories will not involve the Thrombeys or reference the storyline from the first film at all.
7 Each Sequel Will Be Its Own Installment, Following Blanc
Another thing that’s been confirmed about the Knives Out sequels is that each movie will be its own separate entity, in its own disconnected story. Each movie, however, will feature Detective Benoit Blanc, investigating a new conundrum.

Rian Johnson expressed the desire to continue working with Craig on movies, whether they be Knives Out related or not, and it seems in some way Netflix has granted him this wish.
6 They Won’t Necessarily Be Traditional Murder Mysteries
The first Knives Out movie was very much a traditional murder mystery – there’s a rich family at the center, a fortune at stake, and blame being cast faster than analysis can be properly made.
Johnson has stated that he doesn’t want each movie to follow the same narrative arc, or have a similar structure at all as the first installment. He wants to take risks and tell brand-new mysteries, perhaps some that don’t take any inspiration from the classic mysteries of the early 20th century.
5 Daniel Craig Is Set To Come Back For Each Entry
Daniel Craig played an extremely well-rounded character in Detective Benoir Blanc, and despite being British achieved a masterful southern accent to boot. He was the stand-out character of Knives Out, and it looks like Craig will be returning in the role.
In fact, Daniel Craig is the only confirmed actor returning from the first film. As Rian Johnson doesn’t want to continue the story of the Thrombeys, there aren’t too many others who would join Blanc in his next mystery.
4 The First Sequel Will Be Filmed In Greece
Everything will soon be ready for filming to begin in Greece on the first yet-unnamed Knives Out sequel. The first movie took place in South Boston, but the second will take place across the Meditteranean if set locations are anything to judge by.

There are no specifics known on the exact locations being used for the sequel, but the Mediterranean will surely produce a different-feeling movie than the Mansion did.
3 They Will Be Daniel Craig’s First Sequels, If You Don’t Count James Bond
Daniel Craig has enjoyed a very successful career at the forefront of Hollywood as James Bond, a role he recently announced he is leaving after many years playing the British Superspy. Aside from that franchise, though, the Knives Out sequels will be Craig’s first sequels.
Craig might not seem like much of a character actor, but the versatility of his portrayal of Detective Blanc shows he is more than fit to be the figurehead of two different franchises.
2 Everything Is Set For A 2022 Release
Filming will begin soon in Greece on the Knives Out sequels for Netflix, but that still leaves a lot of time for post-production and getting the film ready for audiences. It takes a long time to make a movie, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
If the filming and post-production takes anywhere from a year to a year and a half, we can expect to see the film released on Netflix mid-2022. If it doesn’t go to theatres, though, it might be even sooner.
1 There Could Be Further Sequels After The Third
Rian Johnson said in the past that his chief inspirations for Knives Out include Agatha Christie novels like Poirot, whose adventures took them through countless individual mysteries spread throughout books and film.
Johnson is looking ahead for the next two films, but he has also expressed desire to continue making more mystery films if the demand is there. Knives Out was a lot more well-received than Johnson’s other major recent release Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, and it’s a subject he’s been fond of for his whole life.
