What is Facebook Protect?

Facebook Protect is a specially designed programme for the Facebook users. It is for the users at high-risk of being attacked by cybercriminals or state-sponsored attacks.

Whom is it meant for?

The Facebook Protect is meant for all of the Facebook users. However, the main focus in on journalists, activists, human rights defenders, as well as government officials.

Where was this Facebook Protect programme first tested?

Facebook Protect programme was first tested in the US in the year 2018. Later, it was expanded during the Presidential elections in 2020.

Is it available in India?

The Facebook Protect feature is available in India now. Along with India, it is also available for 50 other countries.

How will people know when the feature gets into action?

The people who will fall under the groups of journalists, activists, human rights defenders, as well as government officials, will see a prompt from Facebook. Facebook will ask them to turn on the feature.

Will it be mandatory to switch on the Facebook Protect feature?

Definitely yes! If you get the notification from Facebook asking to turn it on, it means your account is deemed high-risk. You will also have to turn on 2FA for your account.

What is 2FA?

2FA is an abbreviation used for two-factor authentication. This helps to protect Facebook account in addition to passwords.

Will there be any deadline to switch on Facebook Protect feature?

Yes! You will have to a deadline to accept the prompt from the Facebook.

What will happen if the feature is not turned on within the given time period?

We know that the prompt from the Facebook will come with a time period. If in case you fail to accept the prompt at the given time period, your Facebook account will be locked. If you don’t want to face this, do as Facebook says! 😉

How will people get this feature?

For now, the feature is only available for the above-mentioned category of people i.e., Journalists, govt. officials, activists and, human right defenders. 

However, Facebook may soon allow other people to register for this feature. Till then they can use two-factor authentication.

When the users will activate this feature, they will have to use two-factor authentication and enable additional automated defences for protection. The two-factor authentication aims to protect the Facebook accounts against cyberattacks.
